Great Bridgewater St, Manchester

Owing to the large projecting fins on the project, Design Engine Structures were engaged by the system manufacturer to analyse the unitised curtain wall framing, with detailed analysis of the local twisting effects.

We provided a full 2D plate element finite element model and analysis of the framing with 1D connectors for the fixings, contact elements and structural silicone. The model looked in detail at the behaviour of the fins, how they loaded the mullions / transoms and how the silicone glazing provided restraint, in addition to the general structural design of members and connectors.
